Fingers holding lower dentureDentures look and feel more realistic than ever before, which means you may never want to take them out of your mouth. Not to mention, no one wants to be caught without their teeth. However, it’s best to remove your dentures every night and place them in a soaking solution. You’ll invest in a healthy mouth and body while ensuring you get the most out of your dentures.

Brushing Isn’t Enough

Dentures can’t get cavities, but food particles and plaque can accumulate on them if they aren’t cleaned daily. This can lead to unpleasant odors and infections, and shorten the lifespan of your prosthetic.

It’s best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste or mild dishwashing liquid to clean them at least once a day, preferably after every meal. Brushing will remove food particles and plaque, but your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere.

Harmful bacteria can linger on your dentures. Soaking them is the only way to remove bacteria missed by your toothbrush.

Benefits of Soaking Your Dentures

Your dentist will recommend keeping your dentures in your mouth for 24 hours after getting them, but then you’ll need to take them out before bed. Don’t leave them out in the open. Here are the benefits of soaking your dentures overnight:

  • Gives Your Mouth a Break: Dentures restrict blood circulation to your gums, which can cause irritation and inflammation if they don’t get the nutrients they need. Removing your dentures for the night allows your soft tissues to recuperate to get ready for the next day. You’ll give your gums a break to keep them healthy.
  • Keep Your Dentures Clean: A denture-soaking solution kills over 99% of bacteria to keep your mouth clean and your dentures odor-free.
  • Keep Illness at Bay: Oral bacteria are linked to increasing the risk of several health issues, especially if you wear dentures, like respiratory illness. Keeping your dentures clean will safeguard your overall wellness.
  • Ensures Your Dentures Last: Bacteria can damage your dentures over time. A soaking solution will kill harmful bacteria to promote the lifespan of your dentures. It will also keep them moist when they aren’t in your mouth. If your dentures dry out, they can warp, which can cause them to break.

Don’t Forget to See Your Dentist

Dentures can last for 5 to 7 years before needing to be replaced. Besides caring for your dentures at home, don’t forget to visit your dentist regularly. They’ll examine your mouth to look for anything concerning and check your dentures to ensure they are still functioning as intended. They can also give them a thorough cleaning to maintain your beautiful smile.
