Dental crowns are used to treat a wide variety of oral health problems, from cracks to fractured teeth. Modern dental crowns are so realistic that they’re even used for purely cosmetic purposes, covering up teeth that are chipped or discolored.

However, one serious drawback is that dental crowns usually need time to be milled in a lab. That was the case anyway until the advent of CEREC same-day dental crowns. If you want to know more about this treatment, and how long it takes, here’s some information that you may find helpful.

What is a CEREC Crown?

Traditionally, creating a dental crown required an expert with a wide variety of tools at their disposal. However, CEREC machines have recently become more prevalent, which has allowed dentists to mill dental crowns in-office.

Your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and feed it into the machine, which will then carve a crown out of porcelain designed perfectly to specifications.

How Long Does CEREC Take?

In most ways, CEREC crowns are the same as any other ceramic dental crown. The primary advantage of CEREC machines is that they can mill the crown within as little as two hours.

That means that you could very easily come to your dentist with a cavity, have them take an impression, treat the decay, then walk out of their office with a brand-new dental crown over your tooth! This has made dental crowns, an already incredibly versatile treatment, even more convenient for patients of all kinds.

Other Advantages of CEREC Dental Crowns

While the speed is a wonderful benefit, it’s not the only advantage of CEREC dental crowns. For one, CEREC impressions consist of digital photography, which means that there’s no need to bite into a wad of goo to mold the shape of your teeth.

Getting a CEREC crown on the same day also makes temporary dental crowns unnecessary. These temporaries are used to protect the teeth while the crown is being crafted, but because they’re adhered with a weaker cement, patients usually need to adopt a soft food diet to keep them in place. CEREC crowns make that unnecessary.

As you can see, CEREC dental crowns are a marvel of modern medicine. If you think you could use one, see if you can’t talk to your dentist about whether it could be just the thing for you!
